Top Places To Visit & Tourist Attractions in Cuba
Havana’s Spanish colonial city centre is truly a blast from the past. Built in stunning baroque and neoclassical style, it’s no wonder Old Havana has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On our holidays to Cuba, we’ll explore Old Havana including the Castillo de la Real Fuerza (Castle of the Royal Force), the Plaza Vieja and the 18th century Cuban Baroque style Palace of the Generals. We’ll also visit some of Ernest Hemingway’s old haunts like the Bodeguita del Medio and the El Floridita bar, which features a life size bronze statue of the famous writer.
Located in the province of Matanzas, Varadero is one of the largest resort areas in the Caribbean. Varadero is sometimes also called Playa Azul, meaning ‘blue beach’, for its crystal blue waters. Perched on the wafer-thin Hicacos Peninsula, Varadero boasts 20km of unbroken powder white sand. On our holidays to Cuba, we’ll spend a few days soaking up the sun on Varadero’s impressive beaches and have time to explore the surrounding province of Matanzas, with its narrow roads, beautiful farmland and expansive sugarcane field, on a full day jeep tour.
Cuban cigars are possibly the country’s most famous export and Cuba’s Tobacco Land, Pinar del Río, is the area where the tobacco for these coveted items is grown. Located on the western side of Cuba, this area’s rich red limestone soil gives the tobacco its unique taste. On our holidays to Cuba, we’ll travel through Pinar del Rio to visit a "Casa del Veguero" or tobacco farm including tobacco fields and the farm’s drying house while we learn about the process of making Cuban Cigars.
One of Havana’s most famous in habitants was the American novelist, Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway lived in Cuba for 20 years and wrote some of his most famous novels while in the country, including For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea. On our holidays to Cuba, we’ll walk in the footsteps of Hemingway on a half day excursion including a visit to his home, Finca Vigía, the Hotel Ambos Mundos and the fishing village of Cojímar.
No holiday to Cuba is complete without stepping back in time to 1950s Havana on a vintage car tour. This journey allows you to take in some of the city’s most important and historic highlights in a unique and unforgettable way. On our holidays to Cuba, we’ll take a vintage car tour with stops at Revolution Square, where Fidel Castro addressed millions of Cubans; the Malecon, the city’s scenic oceanfront boardwalk; and the Hotel Nacional, known as a historic haven for celebrity guests like Winston Churchill and Nat King Cole.
