The original citadel and military stronghold of St. Petersburg, the Peter & Paul fortress is a must-see destination when visiting the city. The fortress was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great and was used as a military base until after World War II, when it was restored to the museum it is today. The complex is also home to the Peter and Paul Cathedral, which is the final resting place of the Russian Tsars. On our holidays to Russia, we’ll visit the fortress with an expert, local guide to give the history of this incredible location.
One of Russia’s “Golden Ring” cities, the town of Sergiev Posad is located just outside of Moscow. On our holidays to Russia, we’ll take a guided half-day trip to explore the town and its famous monastery, the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. This impressive monastery is said to be the most important spiritual centre in the Russian Orthodox Church. In addition to the holy site, Sergiev Posad is also famous as the original birthplace of the Russian Matryoshka or nesting doll.
The Red Square is one main centre of Moscow and home to some of its most iconic sites including St. Basil’s Cathedral and the Kremlin. The square itself separates the Kremlin, home of the Russian President, from the city’s famous merchant quarter, Kitai-gorod and has been the site of many historic public ceremonies and proclamations, along with the coronations of many Russian Tsars. With our expert guide, we’ll take in the square’s impressive architecture and learn this landmark’s place in Russian history.
Located in Moscow’s Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral might be the most iconic building in all of Russia. The church’s bright, multi-coloured onion domes are not to be missed when visiting the city. Originally constructed by Ivan the Terrible from 1551 to 1561, this beautiful landmark is full of rich history and now serves as a museum. On our holidays to Russia, we’ll visit St. Basil’s with an expert, local guide and have plenty of free time to explore the inside of the Cathedral at your own pace.
The Hermitage is the second largest museum in the world, comprising of over 3 million items. Founded by Catherine the Great in 1764, this stunning collection includes works by Matisse, Rembrandt, Monet and Degas. The museum also boasts an impressive collection of Classic and Egyptian antiquities, prehistoric art, and pieces from the Italian Renaissance. What is included in my holiday?
Travel Department holidays include flights, transfers and hotel accommodation on bed and breakfast, half board or full board basis, and excursions as specified.
All items that are included are clearly stated in our documentation. Add-ons such as insurance, bags and single room supplements are mentioned separately. In some cases you may have to pay a local departure tax or local transport cost. This will be detailed in your documentation and our local guides will assist you with these. Tipping is not included in your holiday price and information regarding tipping will also be included with your travel documents.
Will I be met at the airport?
You will be met on arrival at your destination airport and transferred to your accommodation. You will be accompanied on all included excursions by your Travel Department guide. Your expert local guide is also available to give you tips and advice on any aspect of your holiday.
What is the deposit and when is full payment due?
Deposit is required on booking and is dependent on your holiday type and starts at €100pp for city breaks. Full payment is due 10 weeks before departure hence if you book less than 10 weeks from departure full payment will be due when you book.
