Top Places To Visit In Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik’s Old Town
The Old Town of Dubrovnik is known for its cobbled streets, red-roofed buildings and towering defensive walls. Wandering through the dazzling streets and squares of the Old Town is a great way to spend a few relaxing hours. At night the town is buzzing with activity, and visitors can enjoy a drink outside at one of the numerous bars & cafés and watch the world go by. On our trips to Dubrovnik, we’ll enjoy plenty of free time to explore the Old Town’s historic sites or pick up beautiful local art and handmade items in the city’s quaint shops.
Elaphite Islands
The Elaphite Islands are a small group of largely uninhabited islands just off the coast of Dubrovnik. The name Elaphite comes for the Ancient Greek word for “deer” and was named for the large herds of deer that inhabited the archipelago. The first mention of the islands was in the first century AD, when the Roman Geographer Pliny the Elder described them in his 37 volume Historia Naturalis. On our trips to Dubrovnik, we’ll have the opportunity to take a boat trip out to explore a few of these beautiful unspoilt islands.
Lokrum Island
The island of Lokrum is a densely wooded nature reserve with a spectacular botanical garden and the remains of a Habsburg fortress. The Fort was built in the shape of a five-pointed star by the French army in 1806, and from the top there is an impressive panoramic view overlooking the island and the city of Dubrovnik. The island is just a ten-minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik Old Town and can be booked locally. On our holidays to Dubrovnik, we’ll enjoy plenty of free time to explore the island at leisure.
Dubrovnik’s City Walls
Dubrovnik’s famous City Walls were built between the 13th and 16th centuries and are still completely intact despite the city being under siege for nearly eight months during the 1991 Croatian War of Independence. The walls are over 2km long and 25m high with no less than 16 towers. A walk along the walls, which takes about 2 hours in its entirety, is a must for any trip to Dubrovnik. On our holidays to Dubrovnik, we’ll enjoy plenty of free time to walk the walls at leisure.
